Shrimp and lobster fra diavlo is an easy 30-minute one pan meal that will definitely spice up your night. That’s because “fra diavlo” is a devilishly spicy tomato sauce that has an abundance of red chili flakes added to it. It’s got some kick to it but it’s a pleasant kick, trust me.
I love my shrimp and lobster fra diavlo garnished with parmesan cheese, basil and parsley. Serve it alongside a couple of pieces of charred French bread drizzled with extra virgin olive oil and flaky sea salt. It’s the perfect meal!
This dish is also wonderful alone especially if you are on a low carb diet or with added pasta. Whole wheat pasta is the best choice for those following the Mediterranean diet. Gluten free and keto pasta will work in this recipe as well.
A typical shrimp fra diavlo recipe uses about a pound of shrimps. I on the other hand use a pound of shrimp and an Atlantic lobster tail that I remove from the shell and cut into pieces. Of course, you could definitely omit the lobster in this recipe if it’s not your thing and add a bit more of the shrimps. Honestly, this would be fantastic with lobster only, but sadly I am not living that kind of lifestyle currently.
You can definitely cut back on the amount of red pepper flakes if you are sensitive to spicy foods. I would start with 1/2 tsp of red pepper flakes and then adjust the taste at the end.
Peel and devein your shrimp
To save on some time and effort, buy shrimp that are peeled and deveined. If all you can find is whole shrimp, then check out this video to learn how to peel and devein them. It’s a very important step in preparing shrimps for any meal.

Ingredients
- Shrimp and/or Lobster
- Crushed tomatoes
- White wine
- Red pepper flakes
- Olive oil
- Shallot
- Garlic
- Oregano, Basil, parsley
- Pasta (optional)
Instructions
- PEEL AND DEVEIN shrimp and pull lobster out of the tail. To pull lobster out of the hard shell, cut lengthwise (using kitchen shears) and break the shell open. The lobster should pull out of the shell easily. Watch here for more information.
- SAUTE the seafood in olive oil on medium heat for 5 minutes and then set aside on a separate plate. In the same pan, add the shallot and garlic and sauté for 2 minutes then add the wine. Let simmer for 5 minutes. Add the crushed tomatoes and oregano, cover and simmer for 15 minutes.
- PREPARE the pasta according to package (if using) and drain.
- COMBINE the seafood into the red sauce and add the cooked pasta. Sprinkle with parsley and basil over the top.
- SERVE with grated parmesan cheese on top and charred bread drizzled with EVOO alongside.
Keto and gluten free options
There are 9 net carbs in this dish when served without the pasta and bread. Hearts of palm noodles or cauliflower rice would make great additions to the fra diavlo sauce.
Shrimp and lobster fra diavlo is naturally gluten free when served alone. Gluten free pasta can be added to the sauce and gluten free bread can be served alongside.
I have a Tomato, Spinach & White Bean Pasta recipe that is gluten free and vegetarian that is so good that you won’t even miss the meat. My CHICKEN CHILI BLANCO and HEALTHY BAKED POTATO SOUP are GF as well.
