This homemade sausage gravy recipe is simple to make and only requires three ingredients. Get those biscuits in the oven because the gravy will be ready in 10 minutes!
I’m definitely not a morning person. Unfortunately, I’m up early even on my days off. As I get older, my ability to sleep in is fleeting but it still takes me awhile to get myself functioning correctly. Cooking breakfast is honestly not my favorite thing to do in the AM. On the weekends, I’d much rather watch TV in my jammies and drink coffee for a couple of hours.
If I feel so compelled to cook breakfast, it’s going to be something quick and easy and that’s where this sausage gravy recipe comes into the picture. My mother taught me this sausage gravy recipe at a very young age and it’s the only way I have ever made it. She used to make biscuits and gravy almost every Sunday morning. As a kid, I remember scarfing them down and then going back to bed.
Now, if you have made my easy and delicious buttermilk biscuits, then this is the gravy that will take that recipe to the moon. I don’t make from-scratch biscuits in the morning because (as we already established) I don’t really function well. But I will make them the evening before since they keep well in the fridge and heat up perfectly in the oven.
I used to always buy canned biscuits and I still do sometimes when I need a quick and easy breakfast. But once I started making my own from scratch biscuits, I found that I didn’t really like the flavor and texture of canned anymore. However, I will not judge you for using canned biscuits as they are easy and quick to make especially when you’re half asleep. Plus, this sausage gravy recipe will make any biscuit taste better.
If you make my fried chicken tender recipe and my buttermilk biscuit recipe, then you can make these delicious, smothered chicken biscuits.
Ingredients
- Breakfast sausage
- Milk
- Flour
- Salt/pepper
Instructions
- First, fry up the sausage. Do not drain off the fat. I prefer to use natural ground breakfast sausage. Its gluten free and contains pork, water, salt and spices. I also use ground sausage that I get from the farm near our house. You just can’t beat fresh sausage from the farm! You could also make your own sausage by adding sage, thyme, salt, black or white pepper, sugar, red pepper flakes and garlic powder to ground pork.
- Add the flour next, just sprinkle it over the cooked sausage and mix for a minute.
- Lastly, pour milk into pan and stir constantly. The sausage gravy will start to thicken once it gets to a boil. Add black pepper and salt (if needed).
Options
GLUTEN FREE OPTION: This sausage gravy recipe can be made with gluten free flour. Make sure the biscuits you use are gluten free as well.
LOWER FAT OPTION: Use 2% or fat free milk to lower the amount of fat in the recipe. Turkey sausage makes a delicious lower fat option as well. Drain off the fat/grease from the cooked sausage if there’s an excess.
We buy our meats from Hickory Nut Gap Farm, it’s a local farm that specializes in grass fed beef and pasture raised pork. I highly recommend that you look to see if there are any local farms in your area. We purchase a monthly CSA (Community Supported Agriculture) subscription from the farm that supplies my family with healthy beef, pork and chicken. The quality of meat is so much better than what you buy in the big named stores.
