I could eat acai bowls every day of my life and be happy. There’s just something about an ice-cold smoothie bowl topped with crunchy granola and sweet berries. I’m going to share my acai bowl recipe with you so you can see how easy it really is to make them at home.
Spring is my favorite season and I love watching the flowers bloom and the warmer air shuffle in. It’s like the world comes alive again. Such a wonderful transition from the cold and blustery winter. It just makes me feel some type of way.
I grew up in South Florida and believe me when I tell you that there are only 2 seasons. Snowbird season and summer. Now, it can get “cold” for a couple of days, and everyone scrambles to find their one and only heavy jacket plus boots. There’s a lot of whining that goes on during these rare days. That “cold” is usually a low of 40 and it’s just awful if you ask most people down there. This always occurs during snowbird season which is when all the people from up north flock down to the warmer climate Florida has to offer. It can get a bit unbearable to the natives.
Thankfully, I now live in Western North Carolina where the cold is very legit. I absolutely love having seasons! Indeed, the winters can be brutal, but it gives you a true appreciation for the change in seasons. Except for the pollen, nobody likes the pollen.
This transitional period of spring brings lots of sun and makes one long for summers spent at the lake. On steamy days, like today, I crave acai bowls (Pronounced ah-sigh-ee) also known as smoothie bowls. In Florida there are shops that sell these delectable treats with all sorts of toppings, sadly there are none here. But DONT FRET because I’m going to show you how simple it is to make your own acai bowl at home.
Are Acia bowls healthy?
Yes! These smoothie bowls are loaded with vitamin C and plenty of other vitamins. You can add more health benefits depending on what you top your bowls with.
Let me tell you a little bit about the acai berry. It is native to the rainforests of South America and has antioxidant properties and contains fiber. As a superfood its helpful for a variety of health concerns, including arthritis, weight loss, high cholesterol, skin appearance, detoxification and general health. Antioxidants seek out and eliminate many of the free radicals that are responsible for a variety of diseases and conditions.
There is preliminary evidence that indicates that the pulp of the acai berry may help in weight loss. It might not only stimulate weight loss but also may help people maintain a healthy weight by reducing the negative impact of high-fat diets. You can read more here about the benefits of the acai berry in this article from Organic Facts.
Acai bowls contain plenty of natural sugars so avoid them if you are diabetic or on a low sugar or keto diet.
How to make an acai bowl
You can find frozen acai in most grocery stores near the frozen fruit. It comes in individual packets that you thaw for a few minutes before adding to the blender. I run the packets under tap water for a couple minutes until you can break them apart. You still want them to be partially frozen. Additionally, I add frozen blueberries, strawberries and banana plus 1/2 cup of liquid (milk, almond milk, kefir, coconut milk, soy milk) and then blend it until its thick and smooth. Pour it in a bowl and top with any fruits you like.
Adding protein powder during the blending process is a great option if you are on a high protein diet. I love to add granola because it gives a lovely crunch. Adding coconut flakes, bee pollen, chia seeds and flax seeds will also increase the health benefits of this delightful bowl. Ultimately, you can use any toppings that you like, it’s your acai bowl.
