Homemade buttermilk ranch dressing compliments many dishes. Use this tangy dressing on your best salad or dip your favorite raw vegetables in it. It’s a dressing, it’s a dip, it’s just plain good.

This homemade buttermilk ranch dressing will have you making up new recipes just to use more of it. It’s really that good. This can be adapted for a keto diet by using keto approved mayonnaise. I prefer to use light mayo and sour cream just to cut down on the fat.

I’ll never forget the first time I saw someone dip their pizza in ranch dressing. I was in middle school, and I can still imagine my face when I saw this unthinkable act play out before my eyes. My mouth dropped open and hit the floor as I was succumbed to watching this horrendous act! How dare these weirdos’ put pineapple on their pizza and then dip it in ranch??? Well, later, I became one of those weirdos. Yes, I pineapple my pizza, sometimes, and yes, I absolutely dip my slice in ranch! My husband does it too so that makes us totally compatible. It was a big reason for marrying him.

What exactly is buttermilk?

Essentially, buttermilk is the leftover milk from churning butter. Churning milk removes the fat by converting it to butter. The churning process leaves the milk in the churn a little sour, but it is full of bacteria that are surprisingly good for you.

Here’s a cool fact, according to WebMD, people who have lactose intolerance may find buttermilk easier than standard milk to digest. The process of making buttermilk involves adding bacteria that break down and digest lactose in the milk. The bacteria convert lactose into lactic acid, lowering the total amount of lactose.

Buttermilk can be used in many dishes. Buttermilk pancakes, waffles and buttermilk biscuits are a breakfast staple here in the U.S. Marinating your chicken in buttermilk takes our beloved southern fried chicken to another planet. It’s also used as a meat tenderizer for tougher cuts of meat.

I use this buttermilk ranch dressing in my buffalo chicken zucchini boats, keto chicken bacon ranch casserole, on salads, as a dip for my southwestern egg rolls, on my charcuterie boards as well as a dip for my veggies.
