This fried green tomato BLT with turkey is so good it will make you wanna slap yo mama! Just kidding, I’m not going to slap my mama and I don’t suggest you do it either. It’s a saying from a movie. If you know then you know. But, daaaaang this sandwich is the bomb diggity. Seriously.

I received a shipment of fresh Florida backyard home-grown tomatoes from my mother a couple days ago. They are some of the best tomatoes I’ve ever tasted! She always sends me a boatload of ‘maters, and they never go to waste. This time she added in a few green tomatoes and when I saw them, I knew exactly what I was going to make. I had to make a BLT with fried green tomatoes!

What is a green tomato?

Green tomatoes are simply unripe red tomatoes. They have a firm feel to them and are completely edible. Their flavor is a beautiful mix of semi-sweet and tangy. What I’m talking about are not those round green things that you see in the grocery store with a husk around them, those are tomatillos. Totally different. Thats not what we are using here for this recipe. I have seen a couple recipes for fried green tomatillos and I’m sure they are delicious, as well.

Fried green tomatoes are truly a southern thing and I had never tried them until I moved to North Carolina. Many restaurants serve them on a plate of grits, in salads, on sandwiches or simply by themselves. My mother introduced me to them and now I’m an equal opportunity F.G.T eater, they are just that good.

Making fried green tomatoes is easy!

Fried green tomatoes are simple to make. For my fried green tomato BLT sandwich recipe, I slice the green tomatoes about a centimeter thick and then dredge in seasoned flour, egg and then panko breadcrumbs. The panko gives these a superb crunch that holds up well in this sandwich. It’s like putting chips on a sammie, which I totally do, don’t judge. It creates a medley of textures that truly delight my taste buds.

Grapeseed oil is my go-to oil for frying but you can use olive, peanut or canola. Just make sure that the oil you use for frying is meant for that temperature. Some oils are better at high heat. Vegetable, MCT and extra virgin olive oil are best with low heat cooking or dressings.

Fry your breaded greenies in a skillet on medium temperature with just enough oil to cover them and don’t crowd the pan. I used a small 6-inch skillet and cooked 3 at a time. Drain on a plate lined with paper towels and try not to burn your mouth while eating one before they cool a bit. It’s called a taste test and its totally legit.

Make this delicious remoulade sauce ahead and let it chill in the refrigerator until you’re ready to use. You can buy remoulade sauce at the grocery store, but you probably have most of the ingredients on hand.

How to put it all together

Let’s make this sandwich already! I toasted up 2 slices of multigrain bread, that’s what we had here, use any bread you like. Then I spread a thick layer of my yummy remoulade sauce or mayonnaise on both sides of bread. I went turkey, bacon, fried green tomatoes and lettuce but it really doesn’t matter which order you put these in. What matters is that you make it to how you like it, and you use quality ingredients. Behold the fried green tomato BLT!

Enjoy y’all!
