This is a recipe for a simple and healthy wonton soup that takes 30 minutes to make. This recipe can be adapted to fit your dietary needs. Make it vegetarian, gluten free or increase the amount of protein to customize it your way.

I am a huge fan of soups especially during the colder months. As a bonus, they are perfect for meal prepping too. This recipe makes 6 servings and pairs perfectly with a sandwich or a salad like my Spicy Kani salad.

You can add some extras in this soup to increase its healthiness like carrots, peas or even beans. Shredded chicken would increase the amount of protein in this dish and would be a delicious addition. And by all means, if you don’t like mushrooms then don’t add any of them. Surprisingly, my husband approved of this soup, and he loathes mushrooms. There’s only 2 of them in it, you guys.

I use frozen mini wontons in this recipe and you can find them in most grocery stores.

Vegetarian/Vegan option

I prefer to use chicken and vegetable mini wontons in my healthy wonton soup recipe. But if you are a vegan simply substitute veggie wontons instead to make a vegetarian wonton soup. You may be able to find them in a specialty store like Trader Joes or Whole Foods. Otherwise, there are some good recipes online that show you how to make your own.

Gluten free option

If you are looking for a gluten free option, then your best bet is to make the wontons yourself. I have not had much luck finding any pre-made gf wontons online or in stores. If you do come across some then please shoot me a message below in the comments form.

Keto option

For obvious reasons this is not a keto friendly wonton soup recipe. I don’t know of any frozen keto wontons being produced currently. With that being said, you can make this soup using pork meatballs instead of the wontons and I think it would be delicious. I will try this in the near future and keep y’all posted!

Is wonton soup healthy?

My recipe for wonton soup is healthy as it has 125 calories per serving along with 18g carbohydrates, 4g of fat and 5g of protein. Adding shredded cooked chicken to this recipe will definitely increase the protein, if needed. And by adding additional vegetables you make it healthier too.

HEALTHY WONTON SOUP

This is a healthy and easy soup recipe that takes 30 minutes to make. Customize the recipe to what you like in terms of vegetables and spicy level. Use vegetarian wontons and veggie broth to keep it vegan or add cooked chicken and chicken wontons to increase the amount of protein. Substitute gluten free wontons for a GF soup option.

Ingredients
  

  • 1 tbsp Cooking oil or butter canola, olive, grapeseed, coconut or ghee
  • 3 medium Scallion chopped
  • 1-2 cup Bok choy sliced thin
  • 1-2 clove Garlic sliced thin
  • 2 tbsp Ginger minced, about 1.5 inch
  • 6 cup Broth vegetable or chicken (low sodium)
  • 2-3 Mushrooms (baby portobellos) sliced
  • 20 Mini wontons or 10 dumplings frozen
  • ¼ tsp Crushed red pepper flakes
  • Salt to taste
  • White pepper to taste

Instructions
 

  • In a large pot saute scallion and bok choy in 1 tbsp of cooking oil (or butter) for 5 minutes over medium heat. Add garlic and ginger and saute for 1 minute.
  • Add broth and mushrooms and bring to a boil. Reduce heat to low and simmer, covered, for 15 minutes.
  • Add the wontons and spices (red pepper flakes, salt and white pepper) and simmer for 5 minutes. Taste to adjust seasonings.
